“Echo” 2015
What distorts in an echo? What gets reinterpreted? Simplified? Lost?
Is there still something to learn? Is there something unique in the echo that’s not in its source?
These “Echoes” are derived from media images of the Civil Rights Movement. And, as time goes by, their stories fade, leaders pass, the echoes unfurl in time and space.
But, real echoes ultimately fade to silence.
These studies represent my own attempt to re-see these images and the relationships of those involved, including the photographer. If I strip them down to the threshold of recognition, is there something more to learn from them? What do they show me? What do I project on them? Can I claim them to the present?
Can I build a new relationship with such transformative images and stories so diluted by time and space?
Echoes.
